About the Author
Dr. Myron W. (Ron) Lustig is a renowned teacher, writer, scholar, and researcher. After receiving his Ph.D. from the University of Wisconsin, he had a distinguished career as a professor of communication at San Diego State University (SDSU). He is now an emeritus professor at SDSU, a past president of the Western States Communication Association (WSCA), and a recent recipient of WSCA’s Distinguished Service Award, its highest honor. He is a former editor of Communication Reports and is currently on the editorial boards of several intercultural communication journals. His teaching and research interests include intercultural, group, and interpersonal communication theories, methods, and processes. Dr. Lustig has written 9 books or book revisions, over 30 scholarly research articles, and numerous conference papers. During several recent spring semesters, he has gained additional practical and theoretical lessons about Intercultural Competence while teaching intercultural communication to undergraduate and graduate students at Shanghai International Studies University. Dr. Jolene Koester was president of California State University, Northridge, one of the largest and most diverse campuses in the 23-campus California State University system, from 2000-2011. Under her leadership, the University improved graduation and retention rates, created a user-friendly campus, strengthened connections with the community, and increased fundraising. She also worked to make the University more learning-centered and focused on student success. Known nationally for her leadership in higher education, she currently serves on the board of directors of NAFSA, an association of international educators. She is also a past chair of the Board of Directors for the American Association of State Colleges and Universities, a former president of the Western States Communication Association, and remains active in issues related to higher education access and leadership. After earning a Ph.D. in speech communication from the University of Minnesota, she began her academic career as a professor of communication studies at California State University, Sacramento, and served in a variety of administrative positions there, including provost and vice president for academic affairs, prior to her appointment as president of Cal State Northridge.

This is the looseleaf format and I am unhappy with it, because the "interactive" boxes only show one 'tab' open and don't show was is behind the other tabs in the printed version. Where online you can probably click each tab to view the text so you don't miss out on any information. In this printed version, each tab should be shown open so all text is visible to the reader. It is like this throughout the entire textbook. I feel the publisher should at least email me all these pages with all the tabs from the interactive boxes open with visible text, as I paid to have a complete textbook, not one with partial information. I am not sure if the other printed formats of this text have the same issue or not, but this looseleaf one does and it's very frustrating, as I'm sure I'll be tested on all the information that should be contained in the book, not just what is printed in mine.I am not unhappy with the delivery of the book, it got here as promised.
Great book; however, I was very disappointed that the Kindle version of the book does not have any interaction ability that it could have, such as enlarging photos or tables for clarity. Why show me interaction options I could have with no chance at an interaction? What makes the book interactive? I'm guessing another access card that the professors don't even want to request because they don't work with the educational mainframe. Also, the details state you can have it loaded on two units; however, that function didn't work. I was only able to read on 1 device and you can't switch it to another one without getting a nasty message that you've extended your license use for the product. BTW, if you have an issue with a laptop crashing, you will lose all of your notes & highlights because they don't transfer back in when you reinstall the readers. Very annoyed with this purchase's accessiblity or lack of. Oh well, maybe we learn something without the bells and whistles. Overall...blah :(
The textbook is well written. However, the kindle version is terrible. There are many interactive boxes which explain important concepts that kindle simply does not support. I am unable to access around 30% of the content in my textbook due to this. I'm lucky that my teacher provided notes for each chapter, otherwise, I would have been in big trouble for tests and assignments.
I had to use this textbook for a college course, and I will admit, I ended up hardly opening it. The parts I did read were "okay," but it isn't as riveting as other things, but certainly could be far dryer than it was. If you have extra time to read, its not a bad source, but for my particular course, I almost didn't need it.
The text itself is an excellent primer on intercultural communication. However, a significant amount of information is presented in interactive widgets that contain multiple tabbed sections - these don't function. The user can only see one tab, and cannot access any of the information on the other tabs in any way. Imagine receiving a print textbook with numerous insets and paragraphs just blacked out. The product information should at least tell you that this is an issue.
Renting Intercultural Competence has been a life saver for me. This is the first time I rented a book and I am very happy that I found this option just before the start of class. The book, itself, is a very interesting and well written textbook. Real life examples are given to accent the subjects covered. I feel so much more intelligent because the book lays down a nice foundation in linquistics culture, verbal/nonverbal communication and life.
Good thing I only needed to rent this book. It’s definitely used with lots of wear and tear and marked up. So don’t think it was me. It came to me like that. It’s still usable.
